SELF-REGULATED STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT

Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) is both a set of student strategies and a method for delivering instruction for teachers that develops student ownership and confidence and allows them to take responsibility for their own learning. SRSD is a structured yet flexible approach that is complementary to your curriculum:
  • Includes six progressive stages of instruction
  • Gives your students opportunities to gradually build responsibility and confidence
  • Gives you explicit tools so students can internalize powerful strategies
  • Builds self-regulation skills in students through the writing process
SRSD RESULTS

REAL STUDENTS USING SRSD

It is examples like these below, from real classrooms in over 100 studies, that has earned SRSD incredible honors in education. The Institute of Education Sciences (U.S. Department of Education), for example, awarded SRSD with their highest designation of “strong evidence”. Today, teachers like you are experiencing their own strong evidence in dramatically improved effective writing and learning.

“If I could make a clone of myself I could write all day.”
– 3rd Grader

“SRSD is scientifically based on 50 years of research in cognitive science and educational psychology. But we also see where students start and where they end. You show that to teachers and it’s pretty obvious.”

Dr. Steve Graham

Educational Researcher, Professor and the Currey Ingram chair in special education at Vanderbilt University
THE KEY BENEFITS

WHY TEACHERS LOVE SRSD

More teaching time, less grading

SRSD instruction allows students to work collaboratively, score their own work and replace the old red markup model of individual grading. After initial training, teachers report that SRSD instruction is more efficient, more effective and takes less time.

Student motivation & confidence building

With Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD), K-16 students build the confidence needed to start writing with success which, in turn, motivates them love writing and learning.

All students improve their learning

SRSD has been proven effective for all K-16 students from typically achieving to special needs to gifted. Plus, students carry their self-regulation skills to other disciplines to become better learners and communicators.

“I had my students asking for more time to write. When do kids ever ask for more time to write?”

Mark Ponte

History Teacher, Bourne MA Middle School
HOW SRSD WORKS

A better attitude produces a better grade.

Achieving writing proficiency is difficult for students. From the physical aspect of writing to grammar and spelling, not to mention content, students become anxious about producing poor work which creates a lack of motivation and confidence. Self-Regulated Strategy Development was designed with six recursive stages framed on a gradual release of responsibility model. Students of all ages experience success from the very beginning which incites them to love their work which translates into grade-level increases. This “belief in self” is the secret to Self-Regulated Strategy Development.

“Writing Next recognises that SRSD has the strongest impact of any researched approach to writing.”

Dr. Karen R. Harris
Educational Researcher, Mary Emily Warner Professor
